Digital Desk: The Defending champions NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) made a strong start to their Durand Cup 2025 campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM FA) in their opening Group E clash at the historic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong.
Shillong, known as NEUFC’s second home ground, greeted the team with electrifying energy and pride. Having hosted several of the club’s matches in both the ISL and Durand Cup, the stadium once again highlighted the city’s rich football culture and deep-rooted support for the sport.
The crowd erupted in cheers as Bollywood actor and NEUFC owner John Abraham arrived to support his team. Expressing his excitement, he said, “Very excited to be back with the Durand Cup here. We are the defending champions, and we hope to put on a strong performance this year.” He further added, “Meghalaya is the Football and Music Capital of India.”
John also thanked the Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Chief Secretary Dr. Vijay Kumar and people of Meghalaya. He also recognised the role of the state in providing land to the new NEUFC Centre of Excellence, that will be one of the best sports academies in India.
With support from Government of Meghalaya and Indian Armed Forces, this is the second year the Durand Cup has been hosted in the state and only goes to show the rising football stature of the state.
