Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was elected Delhi Mayor without an opponent...

Digital Desk: Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was unanimously elected Mayor of Delhi on Wednesday, April 26, after BJP nominee Shikha Rai withdrew her candidature. Oberoi has thus gained a second term as the head of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Rai informed the House that she was withdrawing her nomination because the standing committee election had not been held.

Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, the AAP's incumbent Deputy Mayor, was re-elected when BJP nominee Soni Pal dropped out. The ruling AAP applauded the conclusion of the mayoral elections.

"Congratulations Shelly and Aley on again becoming Mayor and Dy Mayor, this time unopposed. Best wishes to both. People have huge expectations from us. Work hard to meet their expectations," Arvind Kejriwal, AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister wrote in a tweet.

Mukesh Goyal, a senior AAP councillor, ruled over the mayoral election. Goyal is the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's senior-most councillor.

Shelly Oberoi was elected Mayor of Delhi on February 22 after three attempts were thwarted owing to conflicts between AAP and BJP councillors. Oberoi defeated BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes. Oberoi received 150 votes, while Gupta received 116 votes out of a total of 266 votes cast.

The polling took place at the Civic Centre, the MCD's headquarters. Following the completion of a fiscal year, the city elects a new mayor.
