Guwahati: The Assam Government acquires land and house of Late Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika at Kuthori near Kaziranga National Park to set up a cultural center. Last month, seven bighas land was handed to the cultural department which the state government had proposed to set up a cultural project, which will include a museum, a cinema hall, and a library said, Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Officer P K Das.

In 1974, Hazarika had bought the land to build a house, naming it “Apun Ghar." Dr. Hazarika has created several evergreen songs and written many literary pieces in his house itself.

However, due to unavoidable circumstances, he had to sell the land and the house, but his fans had urged the state government to acquire the properties and set up a cultural center in his memory. A statue of the legendary singer-musician Dr. Hazarika had already been installed in front of his house by the local MLA and Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his colleagues had decided to buy back the property and set up a cultural center.

Sonowal government has also acquired his Kolkata residence, which the KMC had decided to include in the list of heritage buildings.
