Digital Desk: The Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre, the Assam government, the Registrar General of India (RGI), and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Monday in reaction to a PIL seeking recommendations to issue Aadhaar cards to the state's 27.43 lakh residents who were denied due to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.

The complainant stated in court that while those whose names appeared on the NRC first list published in December 2017 received their Aadhaar cards, those whose names appeared on the supplementary list were rejected.

Previously, the Assam government had written to the Centre multiple times, seeking that the officials be granted access to people's biometric data. Those whose biometric details were sealed even after their names seemed on the NRC had applied for Aadhar enrollment but were denied by UIDAI.

The 1951 NRC was revised under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court in the state, and more than 19 lakh of the 3.30 crore applicants were left off the final list.
