Digital Desk: A harrowing incident unfolded in Kaljhar village, Barpeta Road, where a mother and her two young children plunged into the Palla River after a dilapidated wooden bridge gave way.

The victims have been identified as Jabeda Khatun and her children, 5-year-old Suhana Akhtara and 2-year-old Jubeid Islam.

The trio was crossing the precarious structure in the Pakabetbari assembly constituency when the bridge collapsed, sending them into the water.

Fortunately, a major tragedy was averted due to the swift intervention of nearby residents, who managed to rescue all three safely.

The incident has sparked widespread panic and fury among the local community.

The bridge falls under the constituency of Congress MLA Zakir Hussain Sikdar, who is currently serving his third term in the assembly.

Residents highlighted that they have been forced to use the risky crossing for years, and despite repeated appeals to the MLA for a permanent bridge over the last decade, no concrete action has been taken.

The near-fatal accident has created panic and outrage, with villagers condemning the administrative negligence that continues to put lives at risk.
