The EC held a press conference at 3 pm to announce the schedule.


Digital Desk: The Election Commission announced on Thursday that the presidential election would be held on July 18. While the vote will be counted on July 21.


"A total of 4,809 eligible voters will vote in the 2022 presidential elections. Therefore, no political party can issue a whip to its members," said  Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar at a press conference. 


Further, Kumar said that an MP's vote would be worth 700. "Those in preventive detention can vote, and those in jail must apply for parole, and if parole is granted, they can vote," he added.


The EC held a press conference at 3 pm to announce the schedule.


The current term of  President Ram Nath Kovind will end on July 24, and an election for the next president must be held before that date.


The president is chosen by members of the electoral college, including elected members of both houses of Parliament and elected members of legislative assemblies from all states, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.


Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, as well as state legislative assemblies, are not eligible to be included in the electoral college and thus are not eligible to vote in the election. Likewise, members of legislative councils are not eligible to vote in the presidential election.


Earlier, the presidential elections were held on July 17, 2017, and the results were declared on July 20.
