The Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala has achieved full readiness for international flight operations, marking a pivotal advancement for air connectivity in Northeast India. Airport Director Kishan Mohan Nehra confirmed the airport's upgraded capabilities during a recent press conference, underscoring its rapid infrastructural growth and increasing operational capacity.
Nehra highlighted that MBB Airport has evolved into a crucial aviation hub for the region, with comprehensive facility enhancements designed to cater to burgeoning passenger demand and future expansion goals, including the much-anticipated commencement of international services. These upgrades are expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and economic activity.
The airport has witnessed remarkable growth in passenger traffic over the past twelve years. Data indicates a nearly twofold increase, with annual passenger numbers climbing from 8.09 lakh in the 2014-15 financial year to approximately 15 lakh by 2025-26. This substantial rise in footfall underscores the growing importance of Agartala as a gateway to and from the Northeast.
The readiness for international flights positions Agartala's MBB Airport to potentially connect Tripura with neighbouring countries, opening new avenues for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. This development is poised to transform the travel landscape for residents of Tripura and the broader Northeast region, offering direct access to global destinations.
