Digital Desk: A day after a Police Station was set on fire by a mob due to an alleged case of custodial death, the Nagaon District Administration demolished the houses of several people who were reportedly involved in the protest on Sunday.
Director-General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, said earlier today that the police are taking the death case seriously, and an investigation is underway.
The DGP also stated that the people, who set fire to the police station, injuring two officers, will face the consequences.
Three arsonists have been apprehended, and search operations are on for the remaining suspects.
Following the murder of a fish dealer, identified by the DGP as Safiqul Islam, a mob set fire to the Batadrava Police Station and many two-wheelers on Saturday afternoon. He was detained by police late Friday evening when he was going to take a bus to Sivsagar. The reason for his arrest is still unknown.
The DGP wrote on Twitter, "We take the unfortunate death of Safiqul Islam very seriously and have put the OC of Batadraba thana on suspension and rest of the staff Closed. If there is any foul play at our end, we mean to find that and punish the guilty according to the law. No two thoughts."
Meanwhile, the deceased's family members claimed that the police demanded a bribe of Rs 10000 and a duck for his release, and the following day his wife visited the police station with a duck.
Later, when she returned with the money learned that her husband had been transferred to Nagaon Civil Hospital. The family members stated that when she arrived, she found him dead.
It may be mentioned that then the Villagers started protesting around the police station, allegedly assaulted on-duty police personnel, and then set fire to the police station, alleging that the trader died due to police torture.
Notably, legal action has been initiated, and further investigation is underway.
