Digital Desk: Assam's Nagaon district authorities, on Sunday, May 22, bulldozed the houses of several families who were allegedly involved in setting the Batadrava Police Station on fire on Saturday.

 

The authorities took the step after a mob set fire to a part of the Batadrava Police Station following a resident's alleged custodial death case.


 

Here are the events that took place that led to the Ripple Effect: 

 

- Safiqul Islam, a resident of Salonibari, was on his way to Sivasagar district on Friday night on a business trip when the Batadraba police allegedly stopped him and demanded Rs 10,000 and a duck from him.


- When Safiqul failed to meet their demands, the police allegedly took him to Batadraba police station and asked him to call his family members to arrange the money and the duck.


- Safiqul reportedly called his wife and asked her to bring the money and duck to the police station.


- Safiqul's wife arrived with only the duck as she failed to arrange the money.


- The police then allegedly started beating Safiqul in front of his wife.


- She rushed to arrange the money, but when she returned with the money, she was told her husband had been sent to the Nagaon civil hospital.


- When she reached the hospital accompanied by other family members, Safiqul's body was lying in the morgue.


- Safiqul's family members and hundreds of villagers brought his body to the Batadraba Police Station and started protesting. The protest ended in a brawl between the mob and the police.


- The mob vandalised the police station and set it on fire. Two policemen were injured in the incident.


- SP Leena Doley said that three miscreants were arrested, and an investigation into the matter has been initiated.


- The SP also assured to inquire into the allegations attached against police personnel, and action will be taken against them if found guilty.


- On Sunday, bulldozers demolished the houses of the accused, which set the police station on fire.


- DIG Satyaraj Hazarika said 20 people had been detained in the case, and the police station in-charge has been suspended.
