Digital Desk: India ranked the third country globally to have recorded five lakh Covid-19 deaths. With this ranking, India marked a gloomy milestone on Thursday.
The countries that recorded the top two ranks in recording the highest numbers of Covid-19 deaths are the United States and Brazil. According to the survey, India took simply 217 to reach five lakh deaths from 4 lakh casualties this year.
Now the fact is, what about those deaths which were left uncounted? During the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the holy river, the Ganges, was found to have shrunk itself with corpses, all related to the casualties caused by the virus.
There is no factual data of how many bodies were floating in India's holiest river. If those counts were included in the survey, India would have sadly ranked top in the list of countries recording the highest deaths due to the pandemic.
Does these uncountable corpses floating on the river, some being thrust in without counts, and some which were put of uncounted flame, reveal messed up conduct by the government authorities. Or does this indicate the pandemic's threat among individuals that even the administration, which consists of people, feared to count deaths?
The nation was conquered by a devastating second wave of the pandemic in recent weeks. It has registered higher than 25 million cases and 275,000 casualties, though specialists stated that the confirmed death toll is several times higher.
The floating dead bodies and cremation during the first and second waves of the Covid-19, round the clock, displayed the picture of unacknowledged counts by the studies conducted.
Usually, Hindus preferred cremate their dead. However, during the first and second waves, people stated that they have chosen to the practice of floating in the river the bodies of youngsters, unwed girls, or those who die from infectious diseases or snake bites.
The covid-19 pandemic has created terror among individuals, and the actual count of deaths will forever remain a mystery. What is gone cannot be traced back easily. Therefore, it will be impossible for the government and specialists to count the number of deaths caused in the nation due to the virus.
A journalist from Kanpur stated that the scene of dead bodies floating in the river was proof of a "massive difference between the official Covid-19 casualty counts and the real numbers on the ground".

The journalist stated that officially 196 individuals had died from the virus in Kanpur between 16 April and 5 May 2021. However, the data from seven crematoriums conducted nearly 8,000 burials.
The milestone achieved by India by ranking third among countries to record the highest Covid-19 deaths is not a landmark in itself. This ranking subsequently indicates government negligence in taking actual records and building substantial healthcare facilities. Moreover, the negligence of the higher authorities to create awareness among an improvised section of the society.
