Digital desk: The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) leaders and three former chief ministers were put under house arrest before the protest against the proposals of the JK Delimitation Commission.
Political parties have promoted angry reactions to this event and stated that such steps would only "incentivize and encourage" violent agitations.
The day started with police parking trucks outside the residences of top National Conference leaders and former CMs Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah. The list of house arrests also included PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and CPM leader Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami. They were conveyed that they were under house arrest.
The Peoples Alliance gave the protest call for the Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) - an amalgam of different mainstream political parties in JK. The parties included NC, the PDP, CPI (M), Peoples Movement and Awami National Conference.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, "Good morning and welcome to 2022. It is a new year with the same JK police illegally locking people in their homes and an administration terrified of normal democratic exercise. Trucks parked outside our gates to scuttle the peaceful @JKPAGD sit-in protest. Some things never change."

He also added that even the international gates of their residences. "Talk about a lawless police state. The police have even locked the inner gate linking my father's home to my sister's. Yet our leaders have the cheek to tell the world that India is the largest democracy, hah!!," added Omar.
Omar has also posted pictures showing police vehicles parked outside his residence. The PDP chief stated the Centre was "deeply paranoid and intolerant when people of J-K want to protest against its disempowerment".
Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti also tweeted, "GOI trumpets scrapping Article 370 and dismembering JK throughout the country but is deeply paranoid and intolerant when people of JK want to protest against its disempowerment. For the umpteenth time, we've been placed under house arrest for trying to organize a peaceful protest."
Indian politician Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami further said that the JK administration was "scared even to allow a peaceful demonstration".
