Hriday Kalita alias Joy alias Suresh Kalita, a Maoist activist, was arrested on April 5 in Kukurmara, near here.


Digital Desk: Hriday Kalita alias Joy alias Suresh Kalita, a Maoist activist, arrested near here on April 5, confessed during interrogation that he served as secretary of an extreme Left-wing organisation called 'Gana Sanskriti Manch, Assam,' as well as a top official of the Progressive Students' Youth Federation, Assam. 

Kalita has named several people working with him from various parts of the state, according to Guwahati Commissioner of Police Harmeet Singh.

Furthermore, he stated that during the investigation, it was discovered that Hriday Kalita was an active Maoist cadre and close associate of CPI (Maoist) central committee member Arun Kumar Bhattacharjee alias Kanchan da, who the Guwahati Police recently arrested. 

Kanchan da, the detained said, that he was regularly provided financial assistance to expand organizational activities in the region. Incriminating documents/literature relating to the Maoist organization were recovered from Kalita's possession by the police.

On April 6, Kalita appeared in court. He was arrested and held in police custody for seven days. 

Following the arrest of Hriday Kalita, the Guwahati Police Crime Branch opened a case under Sections 120(B)/120/121/121(A)/122/384 IPC, R/W Sections 16/17/18/18(D)/19/20 UA(P) Act.
