Digital Desk: A North East Roundtable Conference on the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) was organized on July 10th at Courtyard Marriott, Shillong, which discussed issues related to the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) and had representation from interns, corporate personnel, and state officials. The event had Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as the Chief Guest and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma as the guest of honour.

It was attended by many other dignitaries, including the Health Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang and Deepti Gaur Mukherjea, Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Speaking to the audience, Sitharaman emphasized that the country required industry-ready youths, and most companies felt difficulty in hiring an employee with the necessary skills. She pointed out the PM Internship Scheme as one of the important programs to bridge the gap between academia and industry. She stated that this scheme will provide the applicants real-world exposure in different fields, which will help them in job procuring and develop contacts and networks, and she urged the youth of the North East to fully utilize it.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma underlined the importance of youngsters in the future of India and appealed to the stakeholders to help the young talent. He commended businesses in playing their part and affirmed the state in upsizing the scheme. He stated that the pilot stage has created a solid base; moreover, the future looks brighter, and it will be more effective.

He also captured the opportunities of Meghalaya in development areas such as IT, food processing, tourism, sports, and music, and proposed to tie the internship system scheme with the programs of the state so that it can reach greater results.

With the introduction of the Union Budget of 2024-2025 with a pilot internship program of 1.25 lakh internships, and to offer one crore internships in the next five years, the PM Internship Scheme was launched in October 2024.

The second part of the inauguration was held earlier in the day when the Finance Minister took part in the opening of the Polo Commercial Complex together with other key figures of the state.
