Additionally, write speed describes how quickly the SSD can save files. For editors who need to save or copy large 4K video files, this is especially helpful. Without these rapid rates, the procedure might be excruciatingly sluggish.

Digital Desk: The 990 PRO Series is a new series of SSDs from Samsung that is stated to be designed for a variety of uses, including gaming and 4K video editing, and was recently announced.

Because there were hints that this new SSD would operate on the PCIe 5.0 interface, there is a good bit of anticipation surrounding the 990. Samsung's consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSD will, unfortunately, have to wait longer as the 990 PRO Series (opens in new tab) still uses the outdated PCIe 4.0 interface, just like the 980. An expansion bus called PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is used to transfer data from an SSD to graphics or video capture devices, to give a brief explanation (opens in a new tab). The average data transfer speed for PCIe 4.0 is 16 GT/s, but the average data transfer speed for PCIe 5.0 is 32 GT/s.

This is not to claim that PCIe 4.0 is in any way slower than PCIe 5.0; it is just slower.

 Fast speeds

The 990 PRO Series speeds are impressive in either case. According to Samsung, the random performance of the 990 is "55 percent better than the [previous] 980 PRO." The 990, according to the manufacturer, can read and write data at rates of up to 7,540 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. The 990's read speed describes how quickly it can access stored files. Faster speeds result in quicker app launches. Additionally, write speed describes how quickly the SSD can save files. For editors who need to save or copy large 4K video files, this is especially helpful. Without these rapid rates, the procedure might be excruciatingly sluggish.

Samsung claims that the 990's PCIe 4.0 performance was achieved by combining their V-NAND memory technology (opens in a new tab) with a brand-new, exclusive controller.

Even faster loading speeds are provided by the new devices' use of the NVMe (opens in new tab) (non-volatile memory express) protocol. In testing the 990 SSD with the upcoming game Forspoken, Samsung uses the finding that the map loads in around a second as an example. Hard disc drive tests revealed that the load times increased significantly to roughly 30 seconds.

Dealing with the heat

Samsung created the 990 to be 50% more energy efficient than the 980 PRO, since an SSD with this much activity can get rather warm. The SSD also has a heat spreader label to keep things cool and the company's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to guarantee an ideal temperature.

For individuals who require an additional degree of temperature management, Samsung also offers the 990 PRO with Heatsink model. On how the heatsink concept truly enhances heat dissipation "Offers an additional layer of temperature regulation," the business merely states. However, the Heatsink model has RGB LEDs on the back (which open in a new tab) for an added touch of flair.

The base 990 and Heatsink versions, which have two different storage sizes, will go on sale in October. The price of the 1 TB model is $179, while the 2 TB model is $309. A third 4TB variant is in the works, but it won't be available until 2023. The third SSD doesn't yet have a price listed.
