Digital Desk: Sunday, June 8 marks the seventh death anniversary of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das, fondly remembered as Abhi-Neel. Their families continue to await justice.

On June 8, 2018, Abhijit and Nilotpal were tragically killed by a mob of approximately 250 people in Dokmoka, Karbi Anglong, Assam.

The two had been travelling to explore the scenic Kangthilangso when they were falsely accused of being child traffickers.

The horrific case of mistaken identity led to their brutal deaths.

A public tribute was organised by the Abhi-Neel Memory Preservation Committee in the courtyard of the Navagraha Crematorium Kali temple on June 8.

Speaking at the event, lawyer Bijan Mahajan shed light on the ongoing judicial battle.

He said that 47 accused individuals remain in custody, with the testimony phase having concluded on November 23.

Mahajan highlighted the introduction of a new legal provision, Section 351 under the BNS Act, which specifically addresses mob violence.

Previously, there was no specific section addressing incidents like mob lynching, which posed significant challenges, Bijan Mahajan added.

Additionally, as per section 103 IPC (2), if more than five individuals unite to assault someone based on language or religion, they will be considered offenders.

These legal developments have direct implications for the tragic Abhi-Neel incident, Mahajan said.

Despite delays in the judicial process, Bijan Mahajan expressed optimism for a resolution to this case.

The date for the next hearing has been scheduled for July 1, 2025.
