Digital Desk: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss efforts to resolve the two states' border dispute.

The meeting was supposed to take place on Monday, but it was pushed back because Sarma needed to return to Assam. In November of last year, the two leaders met in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and agreed to form panels of stakeholders to resolve the dispute and hold chief minister-level talks.

According to a Mizoram home department official, the next round of ministerial talks between the two states, scheduled for next month in Guwahati, has yet to be finalised. He stated that the matter will be discussed when Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana returns from a medical leave.

Lalchamliana and Assam minister Atul Bora met in Aizawl on August 9, a year after the two sides held the first round of talks to resolve the dispute in August last year. They agreed to keep the border peaceful and to meet again in Guwahati in October. Three virtual meetings have also taken place between the two parties.

Mizoram and Assam share a 164.6-kilometer border. The two states' border dispute dates back to the colonial era.

In July of last year, police forces from the two states exchanged fire along the disputed border, killing six police officers and an Assamese civilian, prompting the Centre's intervention.
