Digital Desk : At least four people have died and over 50 others are missing after a devastating cloudburst triggered flash floods in the Dharali area of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday around 2pm. It washed away dozen of houses, hotels and homestays in the village that is on the way to Gangotri pilgrimage site.
With rescue work being undertaken, police, army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) emergency teams are already stationed in the affected area. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) too has sent the team of sixteen members , with additional personnel on standby.
Locals and officials estimated that 40-50 houses and about 20-25 hotels and guesthouses have been ruined. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami referred to the devastation as both “very saddening and painful” and talked to leading administration at all times. . Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to CM Dhami to review the situation and offer central assistance.
The cloudburst occurred in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, triggering the floods. In a similar case, there was another cloudburst, hours after in Sukhi Top, another tourist attraction in Uttarkashi. No loss of life was reported there but the water level in the adjacent river grew to abnormal levels according to authorities.
DIG of NDRF Mohsen Shahedi said the tragoc cloudburst incident occurred in Harsil town around 2pm. There are three NDRF teams stationed there with 35-member personnel who are well equipped.
