Digital Desk: After fresh unrest erupted in Manipur late on Saturday, curfew was imposed and the internet has been shut down for five days in the five valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. Trouble began when, around 9–9:30 PM, two women and three men from the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol were reportedly arrested. Clashes broke out between the protesters and the security personnel, causing gunfights and fires that burned their vehicles. Two journalists, as well as a civilian, were injured in the unrest.

In response to concerns over the spread of harmful messages circulating on social media, the Manipur government cancelled mobile internet and data services starting at 11:45 PM on Saturday. Besides, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) stopped people from gathering in groups of five or more before they got permission and forbade anyone from carrying weapons or explosives.

It is reported that the arrested leaders were taken into custody from Uripok because of certain charges. There are plans for a 10-day shutdown in the Imphal valley, which will only allow medical services and media to keep operating. Authorities are still working hard to bring about calm as the atmosphere remains tense.
