The West Bengal government will intjavascript:nicTemp();roduce legislation in the Assembly to replace the governor as chancellor of state-run universities.

Digital Desk: On Thursday, the state cabinet announced that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would replace the Governor as Chancellor of all state-run universities.

As a result, the state administration will modify the statute in the assembly to make the CM the Chancellor of state-run universities.

The Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu announced the decision following the cabinet meeting.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has had run-ins with the state administration over the appointment of vice-chancellors at several universities.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had earlier claimed that the state administration had appointed multiple Vice-Chancellors without the permission of Raj Bhavan.

Governor Dhankhar claimed earlier this year that the vice-chancellors of 25 universities were chosen without the Chancellor'sChancellor's consent.

Bratya Basu, for example, stated in December of last year that it was necessary to investigate whether the Governor should be the Chancellor of Universities.

Bratya Basu taking Twitter, wrote, "It is high time to introspect whether we should continue with the colonial legacy of the Governor being the Chancellor of Universities just under his post or we should nominate eminent scholars and educationists as Chancellors."
