The IMD declares a coldwave in a location when the minimum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius or lower than normal.

Digital Desk: The India Meteorological Department reported a cold wave sweeping portions of Delhi on Sunday, with the minimum temperature plummeting to 3 degrees Celsius in the Ridge area. The minimum temperature is anticipated to drop even further today, Monday. 

According to the India Meteorological Department, a thick cover of dense fog engulfed the national capital this morning, and the minimum temperature is expected to plummet to 4 degrees Celsius (IMD).

"Today, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed in isolated pockets across Rajasthan, and cold wave conditions prevailed in isolated pockets across Haryana and Delhi," the IMD said in a statement.

The IMD declares a coldwave in a location when the minimum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius or lower than normal.

According to the IMD, a few locations in the capital also reported a cold day on Sunday, when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal. 
Most of the city is expected to see dense fog and chilly wave conditions on Monday.

The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's major meteorological station, recorded a lowest temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius, which is three degree Celsius below usual. 

The high temperature was 16.2 degrees Celsius, which was five degrees below usual and the lowest so far this season. 

The temperature in the Ridge region dipped to 3 degrees Celsius, 4.9 degrees Celsius below normal, making it the coldest point in the capital.
