Aligarh: Around 34 professors from Aligarh Muslim University succumb to Covid 19 pandemic in the last 18 days. Professor Shakeel Samdani, dean of the law faculty, suffers from covid 19 and died on Saturday.
Samdani was a member of the Executive Committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. after he tested positive, he was taken to the covid ward of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. he was also suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

The first death of AMU professor dated back to April 20th, 2021. since then around 34 professors were under Covid 19 crisis. All the departed professors lived in different areas of Aligarh city.
In a letter to the director-general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), VC Tariq Mansoor said, 16 serving and 18 retired teachers besides other employees of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have succumbed to the infection in the past 18 days.

There is a probability that "a particular variant may be circulating in areas around the AMU campus and surrounding localities, which has led to these deaths", he said, emphasizing the necessity for the research to restrain the expanse of the infection.
Meantime, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Principal Shahid Ali Siddiqui stated that 25 physicians at the hospital also tested positive for the disease in the last few days. The head of the Medicine Department at the college, Prof Shadaab Khan, had died from Covid-19 two days ago.

The college principal said that there is a lack of oxygen supplies for the hospital. For the preceding 12 days, the hospital has not received a single oxygen cylinder from outside despite constant efforts, he said.
