New Delhi: Members of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) held a protest against in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar today, against the ongoing eviction drive in Assam.

Calling for the protection of the minority communities, the members of AAMSU demanded the re-establishment of the evicted families. The protesters also demanded for an enquiry into embezzlement of money allotted for food and water to the minority students.

The student body has also demanded the establishment of Ajan Pir University in Assam, based on Aligarh Muslim University. In this regard, the union will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister.

Moreover, AAMSU have called for quick resettlement of the evicted people and have given an ultimatum that protests will be intensified if the demands are not met.

It may be mentioned here that the state authorities have been carrying out eviction drive in many places of which the recent eviction drive was carried out at Gorukhuti in Darrang district, which turned violent after clash between the authorities and the evicted people.

The Assam government said it has earmarked about 134 hectare for relocating the evicted families of Gorukhuti  in Darrang district provided they are valid citizens besides a set of other requirements.
The evicted families of Dhalpur villages in Gorukuti will not, however, be paid any compensation as they are “encroachers”, the government said in an affidavit to Gauhati High Court in response to a PIL filed by the leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia.
