  • The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has strongly condemned the targeting of Assam-registered vehicles and travellers in Shillong, demanding immediate action from both state governments

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has vehemently condemned the alleged targeting of Assam-registered vehicles and their occupants during a protest rally held in Shillong, Meghalaya, on Wednesday. The influential student body is now pressing for immediate and stringent action against the perpetrators, urging both the Assam and Meghalaya governments to intervene swiftly to defuse rising tensions.

AASU President Utpal Sarma asserted that accountability is paramount, stating, "Those responsible for targeting Assam-registered vehicles in Meghalaya must be punished. The Assam and Meghalaya governments are urged to take all necessary steps in this regard to ensure justice and prevent further escalation."

Adding to the chorus of concern, AASU General Secretary Samiran Phukon expressed apprehension that such incidents could detrimentally affect the long-standing amicable relations between the two neighbouring states. He underscored the critical need for immediate dialogue and collaborative efforts between the Assam and Meghalaya administrations to address the situation comprehensively.

Phukon further indicated that AASU plans to initiate discussions with other regional student organisations, including the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) and the North East Students' Organisation (NESO), to foster understanding and find a resolution. He emphasised the fundamental right of individuals to travel peacefully and without apprehension across state borders, remarking, "We speak of brotherhood, but targeting vehicles from Assam is not acceptable." The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across Assam, with calls for ensuring the safety and security of its citizens travelling to neighbouring states.
