  • Cotton University students staged a demonstration on Thursday, pressing authorities for the swift opening of a new girls' hostel, a 50% EWS reservation in hostels, and urgent clarification on various academic and scholarship matters

Guwahati: Students of Cotton University staged a significant protest in front of the institution's main administrative building on Thursday, calling for immediate action on a range of pending issues that affect their academic and residential lives. The demonstration highlighted concerns spanning infrastructure, financial aid, and academic policy.

A primary demand voiced by the protesting students was the expeditious opening of the recently completed girls' hostel, urging its availability prior to September. Concurrently, they pushed for a substantial 50 per cent quota for students from economically weaker sections (EWS) within hostel accommodations, aiming to enhance accessibility and support for deserving candidates.

Academically, students sought comprehensive clarity regarding the selection process for Multidisciplinary Education (MDE) subjects, particularly for third-semester undergraduate courses. They expressed apprehension that the current ambiguity could disrupt their academic planning. Furthermore, they requested an opportunity for first-semester students to switch minor subjects, contingent on seat availability and university regulations.

Another critical concern pertained to the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). Students called for an official notification detailing the fourth-year exit procedure, including eligibility criteria, available degree or exit options, and the precise steps to be followed. This clarity is deemed essential for students navigating their academic pathways.

Finally, the protesters highlighted the significant delay in initiating the application process for the Ishan Uday Scholarship for eligible seventh-semester undergraduate students. They urged the university administration to address these issues promptly, emphasizing the impact on student welfare and academic progression.
