The government has ordered all 6,000 private schools in Assam, according to education minister Ronoj Pegu, to register with the fee regulatory authority.
Digital Desk: The Assam cabinet decided on Thursday to convert all all-girls government schools in the state to co-educational schools and to begin teaching math and science in English rather than Assamese, Bodo, or Bengali.
"With the exception of a few historical schools, all government-run all-girls schools in the state will be converted to co-educational schools," education minister Ronoj Pegu told reporters after the meeting.
He also stated that science and math from grades 3 to 12 will be taught in English in all government schools, rather than Assamese, Bodo, Bengali, or other languages.
In addition, each district will have 5–10 schools where English will be used as a medium of instruction in all subjects alongside Assamese, Bodo, and Bengali. Students in these schools will be able to choose which language will be used as the medium of instruction from grades 6 to 12.
The cabinet decided to replace social studies in secondary schools with two subjects: geography and history.
According to the minister, the government has also mandated that private schools register with the fee regulatory authority. "We have about 6,000 private schools, of which about 1,800 are currently registered," Pegu explained.
A 100 crore budget has been approved by the cabinet for the renovation and construction of historic bungalows in tea gardens and the construction of a tourist hotel in Manas National Park.
