  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the state government's commitment to assist families of freedom fighters who lack government jobs or pensions, with deliberations currently underway

Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday assured that the Assam government is actively exploring mechanisms to provide financial and livelihood support to the families of freedom fighters who do not receive government pensions or hold public sector employment. The announcement was made during a commemorative function in Guwahati marking Swahid Diwas, observed in honour of Assam's revered martyr, Kushal Konwar.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the ongoing discussions within his administration regarding comprehensive support for the bereaved families of martyrs. "Continuous discussions are ongoing about the support to bereaved families of the martyrs. We will take measures into our hands to look after those martyr families with no government jobs and no pension," he affirmed, underscoring the state's resolve to acknowledge and aid these historically significant households.

The occasion served as a solemn tribute to Kushal Konwar, the only freedom fighter from Assam who was hanged during the Quit India Movement. Chief Minister Sarma lauded Konwar as an enduring symbol of patriotism and indomitable courage, whose supreme sacrifice continues to inspire successive generations across the state. He emphasised Konwar's legacy as more than an individual, but as a perpetual beacon of national pride and bravery.

Born on March 21, 1905, in what is now the Golaghat district, Konwar joined the freedom struggle at the tender age of 17, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's fervent call for independence. Despite facing personal financial hardships, he remained deeply committed to the national movement, embodying the spirit of selfless devotion. The state government's initiative aims to ensure that the descendants of such heroes receive the recognition and assistance they deserve.
