The hostel resident said the college management is attempting to suppress the allegations. She provided a preliminary estimate of the number of girls sleeping in the hostel facility, stating that there are 20 rooms on one floor and that four girls share one room.

Digital Desk: A Chandigarh University student has been detained by the Punjab Police for reportedly posting offensive videos of dormitory residents online. After hostel residents claimed their clips had become viral, action was taken. According to the university, there was only one "leaked" video, which was a private video that the defendant transmitted to her partner in Shimla.

On Saturday night, a large number of college students protested, claiming offensive videos had been made public. Students who were protesting said that the suspect recorded videos of female students while they were bathing in the dorm.

The police intervened as the argument over the leaked videos heated up and took the girl into custody. The police, however, denied the protesting students' accusations that they had attempted suicide.

Here are the key points:

1) Shortly after the suspect was taken into custody, Punjab Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer mandated an exhaustive investigation. Police say that no suicide attempts or fatalities related to this incident have been reported.

"According to medical data, neither a suicide attempt nor a death has occurred. Anxiety was present in one of the students who was transported in an ambulance, and our team is in contact with her, "said Vivek Soni, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Mohali.

2) One of the pupils who confronted the accused was a girl student, who revealed to a media house that the suspect had filmed on her cellphone while using the restroom.

"50–60 videos of hostel residents are available. She [the accused] sent it to her pal. She acknowledged making the video and later deleted it when we questioned her about the incident. The student spoke with the press.

3) The hostel resident said the college management is attempting to suppress the allegations. She provided a preliminary estimate of the number of girls sleeping in the hostel facility, stating that there are 20 rooms on one floor and that four girls share one room.

4) The police, however, denied rumours that MMS videos had been posted online and insisted there was just one video of the accused. We haven't come across any other girl's similar video yet. According to Mohali SSP Vivek Soni, it seems more like a rumour.

The accused's cell phones have been taken and will be forwarded for forensic analysis.

5) The pro-chancellor of Chandigarh University, RS Bawa, issued the following statement: "The rumour that 60 inappropriate MMS have been identified of students is absolutely incorrect and baseless. Except for a girl's private film that she shared with her boyfriend, no videos of students have been discovered during the university's early review to be offensive.

6) In response to the tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that a high-level investigation had been called for. "Sad to hear about the Chandigarh University event. Our pride is in our daughters. We have ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Whoever is guilty will face strict action. I am constantly in touch with the administration. I appeal to all of you to avoid rumours. "

7) Harjot Singh Bains, the Minister of School Education for Punjab, has urged the university's students to remain calm. He declared that no one guilty would be spared.

8) Punjab is ruled by Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, whose Aam Aadmi Party referred to the incident as "shameful" and urged tolerance.

9) The Punjab State Women's Commission was also made aware of the situation. "There is an investigation going on. I'm here to reassure all parents that the accused will not get away with anything, "said Manisha Gulati, the commission's chair.

10) An FIR under the IT Act has been registered against the accused, who is currently in police custody.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
