According to Kanoongo's letter, he made this suggestion after taking suo moto notice of claims that Delhi's air quality had gotten so bad that it qualified as "severe."

Digital Desk: Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, suggested on Wednesday that schools in the capital be closed until air quality improves because the government of Delhi "had failed to take preventive measures" about air pollution levels.

With this advice in hand, Kanoongo wrote to Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, requesting a report on the actions done within a day.

According to Kanoongo's letter, he made this suggestion after taking suo moto notice of claims that Delhi's air quality had gotten so bad that it qualified as "severe."

According to CPCB, "air pollution at a 'severe level' affects healthy adults and has a substantial negative impact on children and those who already have an illness. "Studies indicate an association between poor air quality and adverse respiratory health outcomes, including asthma, other respiratory symptoms, a deficit in lung function and growth in children, vulnerable people appearing to be most at risk, with decreased cognitive performance among the elderly," the letter says.

In a letter to the Delhi government, Kanoongo stated that he "strongly recommends" that they take into consideration closing any schools in the city "until the national capital's air quality improves, in view of the best interest of the children," and he requested a detailed action report within three days.
