New Delhi: The Delhi Police busted a fake call centre which was fraudulently operating and had duped Northeast Indian People through online shopping/fraud foreign gifts” extortion. At least 20 frauds have been arrested in Rohini, New Delhi, today.

Kuldeep Shekhawat, Cyber Crime lead of Rohini in Delhi along with his team and cyber expert Gaurav Vats (the IT cell in Charge of NGO ‘Helping Hands’) raided a fake call center in Sector 6 of Rohini where the criminals were running the racket. According to officials, the call center was operating with around 20 people who were conning innocent people across the country, with a large chunk of the victim being Northeast Indian states.

Probably the largest criminal ring to have been busted for cheating Northeast Indian people online in Delhi, the frauds carried out their Modus Operandi of this call centre by providing lucrative schemes – such as offering expensive Mi phones at Rs 4,500 – with the ‘cash on delivery’ option. To show the deal as ‘authentic’, they used India Post as their logistics service provider and sent local-made wallets or belts instead of the gadget. After the money is sent online from the customer’s side, the frauds would then block the calls of the call-centre and stopped responding if a customer tried to re-connect with them.

After this crackdown, IPS officer Robin Hibu, the founder of ‘Helping Hands’, has urged people from the Northeast to be “careful” and not to “accept any gifts from foreigners through social media, not to accept any good looking girls’ and boys’ friend requests in social media, and avoid indulging in naked video conversations with unknown good looking females or males to avoid being blackmailed.”
