Digital Desk: The Gujarat government granted Indian citizenship to 41 Pakistani Hindus on Saturday, according to an official notification from the state administration. The Indian citizenship was given over to the 41 persons at the office of Ahmedabad collector Sandip Sagale, who welcomed the Pakistani Hindus. Those who were given the citizenship expressed happiness on becoming an Indian citizen. “Those given citizenship are in the age group of 14 to 70 years. The applications come to us and we do our due diligence before citizenship is issued,” Sagale stated. So far, the Ahmedabad collectorate has handed over citizenship to 971 Pakistani Hindus. A roughly identical number of petitions from Hindus seeking Indian citizenship are waiting, according to the report. According to statistics from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which was filed in Rajya Sabha today, 4,171 foreigners have been awarded citizenship, with Gujarat granting 1,089 of them. Rajasthan is the second most populous state, with 751 people awarded Indian citizenship, followed by Madhya Pradesh (535), Maharashtra (446), Haryana (303), and Delhi (301). The Ministry also released data by year. In 2016, 212 persons were given Indian citizenship, 161 in 2017, 309 in 2018, 265 in 2019, and 142 in 2020.
