A routine training mission turned tragic yesterday evening when an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet crashed in the remote Inglong Ekopi Hill area of Bokajan Sub-Division, Karbi Anglong district, Assam. Both pilots, Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, succumbed to their injuries in the incident, which occurred approximately 60 kilometers from Jorhat Air Base.
The aircraft, which had taken off from the 47 Squadron at Jorhat Air Base, reportedly lost radar contact at approximately 7:42 PM. The crash site was first discovered by vigilant locals from Chokihola village within the Bokajan sub-division. These villagers promptly reached the wreckage and were instrumental in recovering the bodies of the two deceased officers.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today conveyed his profound grief over the loss of the two brave officers. In a statement, he praised the unwavering courage and dedicated service of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, assuring that their sacrifice would always be remembered with immense pride and gratitude. The Minister reaffirmed the nation's solidarity with the bereaved families during this difficult time, extending his deepest condolences. An investigation into the precise cause of the crash is expected to commence.
