The Indian Air Force is set to receive two indigenously developed high-tech “Mountain Radars” to strengthen its ability to detect enemy aircraft in challenging terrains
Digital Desk: Designed to identify low-flying fighter jets, missiles, and drones, these advanced radar systems will significantly enhance surveillance capabilities in mountainous regions. The radars are capable of detecting aerial threats from low altitudes, even in complex high-altitude environments.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Mountain Radars will be strategically deployed in sensitive areas such as Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. These systems can be transported and installed in high-altitude zones using helicopters, ensuring operational flexibility.
The Defence Ministry has signed a contract worth ₹1,950 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of these radar systems.
The Mountain Radars have been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation at its Bengaluru-based laboratory, while BEL will be responsible for their manufacturing and supply.
The induction of these indigenous systems marks a significant step in enhancing India’s defence preparedness along its mountainous borders.
