The institute is trying to tie up with the industrial sector so that it learns to create different products from biodegradable plastic and make these things available to consumers, he said.

Digital Desk: An official from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati stated on Sunday that the institute plans to work with the business community to make biodegradable eco-friendly plastic available to the public as a substitute for single-use plastic (SUP).

The declaration follows the Union government's July 1 ban on SUP goods.

According to Dr. Vimal Katiyar, Dean of the top institute's Research and Development, IIT Guwahati is working on various projects employing locally made biodegradable plastic, polymers, and resins to create carry bags, food trays, toys, and medical equipment.

The institute is trying to tie up with the industrial sector so that it learns to create different products from biodegradable plastic and make these things available to consumers, he said.

Dr Katiyar was in Indore to participate in a function of the plastic industry.

Sachin Bansal, head of the city's Indian Plast Pack Forum, announced that his group has chosen to collaborate with IIT Guwahati to receive training in the method of making various objects out of biodegradable plastic.

He announced that a delegation from the forum would go to IIT Guwahati.

The manufacturing of single-use plastics worth Rs 100 crore in Madhya Pradesh alone has been put on hold by the Center's prohibition, according to Bansal, who also claimed that they are looking for a workable substitute for SUP so that production may begin.
