On April 10, 2018, based on intelligence information about the presence of terrorists in the area, the forces engaged them fiercely and the gun battle continued for over 12 hours. During the heavy exchange of fire, Naik Nainwal sustained serious injuries in his spine and was admitted to Army Research and Referral Hospital, New Delhi and later referred to Pune Military Hospital.

However, after battling for forty days, Naik Deepak succumbed to his injuries on May 20, 2018.
