Despite the holiday, banking operations will continue as usual for government-related transactions
Digital Desk: The 31st March is being observed as a gazetted public holiday in several Indian states on account of Mahavir Jayanti, leading to the closure of many government offices, private establishments, and educational institutions. States such as Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan are among those where closures are expected.
Despite the holiday, banking operations will continue as usual for government-related transactions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed bank branches to remain open to facilitate the completion of financial year-end accounts. However, some branches may operate with limited staff or restrict services for the general public in certain regions.
Meanwhile, Income Tax offices across the country will remain operational. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has instructed all offices to stay open on 31st March to ensure the timely completion of pending fiscal year-end work, as the date marks the close of the financial year.
Cities where the public holiday is being observed include Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Kolkata, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, and Ranchi.
The Government have advised people to check specific local and state notifications for clarity on the functioning of government offices and schools in their respective areas.
