Digital Desk: A man was executed after a court found him guilty of setting his ex-wife on fire while she was live streaming on an online portal in China.

The Global Times reported that before being assassinated in the southwest Sichuan province, the accused, named Tang Lu was permitted to have one meeting with his family.

In September 2020, when his ex-wife was live-streaming on the video platform Douyin, which is similar to Tiktok, Lu set her on fire. A few weeks later, the woman, known online as Lamu, died of her injuries.

The incident sparked significant censure and indignation across the nation, drawing attention to the challenges that women in violent marriages face.

According to Chinese official media, Tang had a history of physically abusing Lamu, and the couple divorced in June 2020. In the following months, he sought her out numerous times and proposed remarrying her, but she refused.

A farmer, Lamu, posted short videos and live streams on Douyin showing glimpses of her everyday activities and the Sichuan countryside. She was a woman of Tibetan origin, and in the recordings, she frequently wore traditional Tibetan attire.

Lu showed up behind her on the day of the incident as she was live streaming on the site, doused her in gasoline, and set her on fire. Soon after, he was arrested, and in October 2021, he got a death sentence. His judicial appeal was rejected in January 2022.
