Digital Desk: In Nongpoh, Meghalaya, a distressing incident was reported where armed miscreants fired at police. At around 9:30 AM, reports surfaced regarding the sighting of armed miscreants in the vicinity of the jungle area near Ranibari village, Nongpoh, on Tuesday.

Upon receiving this information, the in-charge of the Rani Border Outpost, along with staff, promptly mobilised to the area. As they ventured into the jungle, the miscreants opened fire on the police. Despite the threat, the police refrained from retaliatory measures due to the presence of children and women nearby, opting instead to pursue the assailants.

In the subsequent search operation, two individuals, identified as Shri Ajit Rabha (18 years old) and Smti Kavita Rabha (also 18 years old), were apprehended.

Preliminary interrogation revealed their involvement in a criminal gang specialising in theft, including the illegal felling of Sal trees, theft of bikes, and betel nuts. The gang's leader was identified as Shri Rudra Rabha, who was related to Ajit Rabha as his stepfather.

In addition, a country-made SBML firearm and gunpowder used for ammunition were seized during a search of Ajit Rabha's residence. The RI Bhoi Police are currently conducting extensive combing operations in the area to locate the remaining miscreants.

A case is being registered at Khanapara Police Station under relevant sections of the law in connection with this incident.
