Digital Desk: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma defeated his BJP opponent Bernard Marak and won the South Tura constituency with 10,090 votes, the Election Commission declared on Thursday.

The Commission announced the results after the counting of ballots in the February 27 Assembly elections was concluded.

Marak received a total of 7,260 votes.

Sangma expressed his pleasure and thanked the people who voted for his National People's Party (NPP).

The NPP is leading in 26 out of the 60 Assembly constituencies and looks certain to retain power in the hill state for the second consecutive time.

However, the Chief Minister's elder brother, James Pangsang K. Sangma, a three-time NPP MLA, was defeated in the Dadenggre constituency by Rupa M. Marak of the Trinamool Congress by just 18 votes.

James Sangma received 15,684 votes, while Marak received 15,702.
