Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, has sought a three-month window to engage with the central government regarding the relaxation of specific clauses pertaining to coal mining in the state. This appeal for patience comes amidst a deepening crisis, marked by the failure of recent discussions aimed at de-escalating the ongoing agitation.
On Tuesday, talks between state government officials and a delegation of coal mine owners from the Jaintia Hills region concluded without a resolution. The mine owners, who met with Chief Secretary Shakil Ahammed and Principal Secretary Fredrick Roy Kharkongor at the Secretariat, later expressed their dissatisfaction with the assurances provided by the government, indicating a continued deadlock.
The failure of these negotiations coincides with an indefinite hunger strike, which has been ongoing since June 1. Led by Marshall SB Biam, president of the Jaintia Coal Owners, Miners, Suppliers and Workers Association, the protest intensified on Tuesday when Biam was rushed to the hospital after 16 days of fasting due to deteriorating health. Coal miners, particularly from the East Jaintia Hills, are demanding that the state government ease certain mining clauses, which they argue are crucial for the benefit of small-scale miners.
As the Deputy Chief Minister appeals for calm and time to negotiate, the unresolved demands and the deteriorating health of the strike leader underscore the urgent need for a viable solution to the state's complex coal mining issues.
