Digital Desk: In an effort to address the recent spike in tomato prices, the government declared on Friday that consumers can expect relief in the coming days as the arrival of a new crop from Maharashtra has greatly improved supply in the market.

Ashwini Kumar Choubey, the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, responded to a question in the Rajya Sabha by saying that lower production during the kharif season and increased demand seen over the festive period were responsible for the increase in tomato prices.

The government has set in place a thorough system of monitoring using a dashboard to closely monitor the costs and supply of critical goods, including tomatoes, in order to tackle the issue. As a result, they are able to act quickly to assure a sufficient supply and prevent any attempts at profiteering or storage.

The Essential Commodities Act of 1955 and the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act of 1980 should also be enforced, according to the advice given to the states and union territories. These actions are intended to stop any market artificial shortages or unnecessary price increases.

Additionally, the government has gone out of its way to make it easier to import onions and tomatoes from other nations, which has increased their domestic availability and helped to moderate prices.

According to information from the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation, and Farmers Welfare, there was a significant increase in the quantity of new tomato crops grown in Maharashtra, rising from 72,000 quintals in October to 1,68,000 quintals in November. It is anticipated that this boost in supply would lead to decreased tomato prices soon, providing much-needed relief to consumers.
