Digital Desk: With current Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood set to retire in May, the central government has officially initiated the search for his successor.

A shortlist of high-ranking Indian Police Service (IPS) officers is currently under review as the selection process nears its conclusion.

Leading the race is Rajasthan DGP Rajeev Sharma, followed closely by former Assam DGP G P Singh.

Other prominent names on the panel include Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Director General (DG) Praveer Ranjan and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) DG Alok Ranjan.

Both Rajeev Sharma and Praveer Ranjan bring significant prior experience within the CBI to the table, which may influence the final decision.

Additionally, reports suggest that if Alok Ranjan is selected, he may be granted a tenure extension.

The government's selection panel is in its final stage of deliberation.

An official announcement regarding the new CBI Director is expected to be made before the end of April.
