Digital Desk: Several Afghan children and a woman were killed
when Pakistani forces fired rockets along the border in a pre-dawn attack
Saturday, officials and residents said.
Afghanistan has been facing border tensions since the Taliban
seized power last year, with Pakistan alleging that militant groups were
attacking from Afghan territory.
Islamabad is building a fence along their 1,600-mile
(2,700-kilometre) border, known as the Durand line, that was drawn up in
colonial times. The Taliban deny harbouring Pakistani militants, but are also
enraged by a fence being built by Islamabad.
An Afghan government
official and a resident in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province said Pakistani
forces fired rockets early on Saturday that left six people dead.
A similar pre-dawn
assault was also carried out in Afghanistan's Khost province near the border,
another Afghan government official said.
Border areas between
the two countries have long been a stronghold for militant groups such as the
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which operates across the porous frontier
with Afghanistan.
