Digital Desk: A journalism student in Chennai was sexually abused by an Uber autorickshaw driver, who continued to drive away after the incident. On Sunday night, Ishita Singh was travelling back to a city hotel with a friend when the incident took place.

When she described the incident on Twitter, she asserted that she had booked an Uber autorickshaw to drive her from a restaurant to a hotel in Semmancheri. The driver allegedly grabbed her inappropriately as she and her friend left the car when they arrived at their destination.

In her post, she mentioned Tamil Nadu Police: "When my friend and I were passing by the Ibis OMR Hotel, an Uber Auto driver named Selvam sexually attacked me by pressing my right breast."

In a tweet, she added that the driver fled the spot after she raised an alarm. Following the incident, the woman claimed she dialled the police but "there was no response".

The woman also posted photos of the autorickshaw in which she and her friend were travelling, along with screengrabs of her Uber trip. She has also shared her ride transaction details and the name of the driver.

Replying to the Twitter thread, the Tambaram Police Commissionerate said a case has been registered and a search is on for the accused.



Uber India, taking cognizance of the incident, asked the woman to share the details of her ride for necessary steps to be taken.
