Digital Desk: The Supreme Court (SC) of India has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case involving the alleged custodial torture and subsequent death of a youth named Dipankar Gogoi in Titabor.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kumar and K. Vinod Chandran issued the directive and served formal notices to the Assam government and four high-ranking Assam police officials.
The officials named in the notices include the then-SP Mohanlal Meena, SDPO Kakoli Patgiri, Titabar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Laxman Kumar Das, and Investigating Officer Miraj Doley.
The legal action follows a petition filed by the victim's sister, Rimlee Gogoi, who moved the SC after the Gauhati High Court previously declined her request for a CBI investigation.
The case dates back to 2023, when Dipankar Gogoi was allegedly arrested on false charges and subjected to severe physical assault while in the custody of Titabor police.
Following the alleged torture, Dipankar took the extreme step of ending his life.
The incident triggered widespread outrage across the state, prompting the state government to initially order an inquiry by the Additional Chief Secretary.
By transferring the case to the CBI, the Supreme Court has signalled a commitment to ensuring a transparent investigation and providing appropriate legal assistance to the victim's family.
