Digital Desk: The Supreme Court noted on Thursday that political parties' promises and distribution of freebies during election season are "a major concern" because the economy is losing money due to this.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay seeking a prohibition on political parties' giving of "freebies" to entice voters in the run-up to elections. The petition demanded that measures be taken to control electoral manifestos and hold political parties responsible for their commitments therein.

"Nobody denies that it is a problem. It's a major problem. Those who are getting it want it, and ours is a welfare state. Some would argue that since they pay taxes, they should go toward the growth process. The situation is serious. Therefore, the committee must hear from both sides," said Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana.

The CJI also stated that the central government of India "had plans to feed the poor" and that the country "has poverty." He added that the economy was losing money and that "people's welfare has to be balanced."

The court will next hear the plea on August 17.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has previously opposed the argument, plea asserted that "schemes for the socioeconomic welfare of worthy and disadvantaged masses cannot be termed as "freebies". The petitioner, who the party claimed had "strong linkages" to the BJP, was also charged with "furthering a certain political goal."
