Women's consumption has dipped in all age groups and the same with men. Consumption among women is highest in Arunachal Pradesh (18%) followed by Sikkim (15%).


Digital Desk: The percentage of Indian men consuming alcohol has fallen significantly from 32% to 22% in the last 15 years. 


Reportedly, the percentage of women drinking alcohol has also seen a fall from 2.2% to 0.7% in the same period. The survey was conducted in around 6.37 lakh sample households in 707 districts in 28 states and 8 Union territories, covering 7,24,115 women and 1,01,839 men. Women's consumption has dipped in all age groups and the same with men. Consumption among women is highest in Arunachal Pradesh (18%) followed by Sikkim (15%).


Men top in Goa with a consumption rate of 59%, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (57%) and Telangana (50%), and lowest in Lakshwadeep with only 1% consumption rate.


Among women, more common is in Scheduled Tribes. Drinking is most common among Christian men (36%) and "other" religions 49%, men with less than 5 years of schooling (33%), scheduled tribe (34%), men aged between 35-49 years is 30%. 


Alcohol consumption among men across all faiths has dipped over all the religions except in the Jain community.


The percentage increased shockingly among Sikh, Buddhist and Jain communities.


The report also stated that 39% of men and 4% of women aged between 15 and 49 years use some form of tobacco. The most common form of tobacco consumption among men is chewing pan masala or gutkha (15%), followed by smoking cigarettes (13%), using khaini (12%) and smoking bidis (7%).
