Guwahati: The state govt of Assam is mulling plans to establish a University in the name of the first Ahom ruler Chaolung Sukapha.  

The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing a meeting on Sunday with the Tai Ahom community.  

Assuring the people in the meeting, CM Sarma said, “Government will pay full attention to the all-around development of the Ahom community.”

“Ahom community has also received a good response on Tribalism in Assam.” CM Sarma added.  

Moreover, CM Sarma guaranteed that Charaideo would be free from all illegal encroachments in the coming days. 

Additionally, the CM informed that a statue of Mahamati Sukapha will be installed at the Assam Secretariat in the forthcoming days.

“Tai-Ahom will be accorded protected class status in tribal blocks and belts of the state, while the state government would set up a Tai Language Teaching center,” said CM Sarma. 

He said the ‘Sukapha Samannay Kshetra,’ a memorial built at Jorhat in the memory of the first Ahom king Sukapha, would be turned into a top tourist attraction.

“Rs. 125 crores sanctioned to Tai Ahom Development Council would be released by November 30.” added the CM. 

Further, CM Sarma appealed to the indigenous communities of Assam to remain united so that Assam could be protected from infiltrators.
