Digital Desk: The Ambience Mall, the DLF Promenade and the DLF Emporio of Vasant Kunj, the three major shopping centers in New Delhi, are under threat of closure since they are facing a severe water crisis that is interfering with their daily operation . The shortage has forced around 70% of restrooms to shut down because of the blocked toilets, and cafes and restaurants are finding it difficult to serve to the customers.

The crisis, persisting since 2008, intensified after police halted the supply of private water tankers accused of sourcing water from illegal borewells . Although, the malls have been buying treated water in the HUDA plants of Haryana but the shutdown has been a big blow to its operations. A government official stated that the supply through the private tankers had been halted after an order was issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), who caused a police raid on the illegal extraction of water.

The authorities of Mall have threatened to close down the Mall unless water is supply is restored soon, they may be forced to suspend operations, which could result in millions of rupees in business losses and impact thousands of jobs. The three adjoining malls collectively attract thousands of visitors daily, serving as key commercial and recreational hubs in South Delhi.

The crisis has also underscored the larger issue of Delhi’s fragile water infrastructure. Several other parts of the city, including Surajmal Vihar, Shalimar Park, Vishwakarma Park, Chitra Vihar, and parts of Vasant Kunj, are facing similar shortages due to the non-availability of Ganga raw water for the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plants over the coming week.

Residents of Vasant Kunj’s C Block reported receiving messages from their Resident Welfare Association (RWA) warning of alternate-day water supply. Officials  are putting pressure to resume the regular supply of water and stop closing these key commercial hubs that represent the modern shopping environment in Delhi.
