A heavy police contingent has been rushed to the spot, and rescue operations are underway...

Digital Desk: As many as six people were killed and several others were injured in a firecracker factory explosion in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Sunday, police said.

According to media accounts, the explosion occurred at around 10:00 am and also damaged several areas nearby. As long as rescue efforts continue, the death toll is expected to rise.

According to locals, the factory has been operating illegally for several months. They claimed that local politicians and the police were in collusion.

A heavy police contingent has been rushed to the spot, and rescue operations are underway. An official death toll has not yet been released by the administration.

In the past four months, there have been three similar incidents. Earlier on May 16, a similar explosion in East Medinipur's Egra claimed the lives of nine people and severely injured another seven.

The factory which was operated out of a residential structure, collapsed due to the impact of the explosion. Later, the owner of the illegal fireworks factory passed away in Cuttack, Odisha. A bomb that was nearly identical to the one from the previous incident occurred in the South 24 Parganas Budge Budge area on May 21.

People are raising concerns about the government's intentions to prevent such instances from happening again in the state as a result of these incidents, which have inflamed their resentment.
