Digital Desk: In a significant anti-smuggling operation, the Guwahati Customs Division seized hydroponic cannabis worth ₹1.46 crore at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) on December 24, 2025.
Officers of the LGBIA Unit intercepted the contraband during routine screening of checked-in baggage for passengers traveling on Flight No. FD-124 from Chennai (DMK) to Guwahati (GAU). During the inspection, Customs officials discovered suspicious items in the luggage. A detailed examination revealed three packages containing approximately 1.463 kilograms of dried greenish material, suspected to be hydroponic cannabis.
The recovered substance was subjected to a preliminary test using the drug detection kit available at the Customs office. The test results confirmed the strong presence of cannabis, prompting the authorities to initiate legal action. A case of outright smuggling has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The total estimated market value of the seized narcotics is ₹1,46,30,000 (Rupees One Crore Forty-Six Lakh Thirty Thousand Only). Authorities have stated that further investigation is ongoing to trace the origin of the consignment and identify those involved in the smuggling attempt.
Customs officials emphasized their continued commitment to preventing the illegal trafficking of narcotic substances and ensuring strict enforcement of the NDPS Act. The operation highlights the vigilance and effectiveness of Guwahati Customs in curbing drug smuggling at major entry points in the region.
This seizure is expected to act as a deterrent to future smuggling attempts and reinforce the airport’s security protocols for passenger baggage screening.
